Whakapapa Workshops

The Law Centre has received funding from Te Putahitanga to carry out a number of whakapapa workshops throughout the region. These workshops are open to all Maori living within the Ngai Tahu Rohe.

These workshops will be an opportunity for us to assist you with research, drawing up whakapapa charts, or connecting you with useful sources of information.

If you would like our help with any whakapapa research, or if you are interested in having us host a workshop in your area, please get in touch.

Upcoming Outreach Clinics

The Law Centre holds regular outreach clinics throughout Te Waipounamu. These outreaches are a good opportunity to discuss any questions you may have about Maori land, and to meet with the lawyers kanohi ki te kanohi.

  • Invercargill - Mid 2016 - To be confirmed
  • Arowhenua Marae - Mid-late 2016 - To be confirmed
  • Christchurch and West Coast - On enquiry

Please do not hesitate to contact the Law Centre if you would like to book an appointment for any of our upcoming outreaches.

Te Ture Whenua Review

Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993 is currently under reivew. Information about the Bill, and the most up-to-date draft, is available on the Te Puni Kokiri website here.

Consultation hui have been held across Aotearoa, and the overwhelming response to the proposed changes was negative. The public expressed grave concerns that if the Draft Bill comes into force, Maori land could be lost, and whanau could become disconnected from their whenua.

Following that consultation process, amendments were made to the Draft Bill. While these changes made some improvements, the Law Centre still had serious concerns for our community regarding the Draft Bill.

The Bill has now entered the Select Committee process. The Law Centre would be interested to hear the opinions of our clients regarding the proposed Bill, so that we may include this information in any submission we may make to the Select Committee.

The Ngai Tahu Maori Law Centre welcomes your input on this subject. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like to discuss this further.
