Introduction
The Ngāi Tahu Māori Law Centre is one of 24 Community Law Centres in Aotearoa, based in Dunedin. We were established in 1993 by our three local Ngāi Tahu Rūnaka; Te Rūnanga o Moeraki, Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki and Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou. We are funded primarily by the Ministry of Justice.
Our mission is to:
- Provide an excellent free legal service for Māori land matters.
- Educate and empower Māori land owners through knowledge and experience working with the law.
- Pass knowledge down to the next generation to educate and empower wider whānau and hapū of our Māori land owning community.
Through advocacy we aim to meet the needs of our people and increase the awareness of legal issues pertaining to Māori land and other taonga. We recognise Ngāi Tahu values and align ourselves with the Ngāi Tahu 2025 vision.
We provide:
- Specialist legal services relating to Māori land, free to those who qualify.
- Free community education.
